About Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote and the Canary Islands
Lanzarote is the easternmost island of the Canary Islands and has volcanic origin. Lanzarote has 213 km of rocky coastline, with sandy beaches scattered in between. The dramatic landscape is dominated by the mountain ranges of Famara (671 m) in the
north and Ajaches (608 m) to
the south. South of the Famara massif is the El Jable desert which separates Famara and Montañas del Fuego.
Puerto del Carmen is situated a 10 minutes drive from Arrecife airport and offers 5kms of broad sandy
beaches as well as a wide variety of places to shop, eat and drink. Puerto del Carmen has no high-rise structures and almost all buildings are white and unpretentious. A great variety of restaurants in the old part of the town around the busy fishing harbour serve fresh fish, while the newer part features pubs, bars and more restaurants.
Puerto del Carmen's mild climate offers the ability to enjoy outdoor activities all year round. All of the beaches are awarded with the Blue Flag for cleanliness and lack of contamination. Diving schools and windsurfing centres provide for the most popular watersports including marine excursions, deep sea fishing and scuba diving. A new golf course has been set up replacing the older and less attractive golf course of earlier years.
The Lanzarote mountains are ideal for trekking offering some of the world’s most unique vistas.
